The 10-channel precision attenuator with a floating-ground, independent circuit is a passive, high-accuracy line-level signal control solution designed for professional hybrid studios. Positioned before the summing stage, it provides transparent and repeatable gain staging across any balanced-unbalanced audio chain.

Signal Chain Integration

Custom built per customer request, the VintageMaker 10 Channel Passive Attenuator was designed to sit at a critical control point inside a high-end hybrid analog mixing chain – before Rupert Neve Designs 5059 Summing Mixer

Below is the exact placement within the signal path:

1️⃣ Phoenix Audio DRS-8

(8 channels of DI + mic pre)
→ Harmonic depth and analog preamp character

2️⃣ Handsome Audio Zulu 500 Series

(8 units – analog tape emulator)
→ Saturation, compression, glue

3️⃣ Rupert Neve Designs 551 EQ – 500 Series

(8 units)
→ Stem-level tonal shaping

4️⃣ VintageMaker 10 Channel Precision Attenuator

🎯 Precision Gain Staging Stage

→ 21-step precision attenuation (0 dB to -70 dB)
→ Balanced TRS Line Inputs & Outputs
→ Controls how hard the summing mixer is driven
→ Ensures optimal analog headroom
→ Provides repeatable recall in hybrid sessions

This stage defines the sweet spot of the entire summing section.

5️⃣ Rupert Neve Designs 5059 Summing Mixer

→ Analog summing character and harmonic interaction

6️⃣ Mix Bus Processing (Various 19” Units)

→ Bus compression
→ Final tone shaping
→ Stereo control

7️⃣ Rupert Neve Designs Master Bus Converter

(AD Converters)
→ Final high-resolution capture back to digital

Why This Placement Matters

Positioning the VintageMaker Attenuator directly before the summing mixer allows:

✅ Precise stem level control
✅ Perfect summing drive management
✅ Protection against unwanted saturation
✅ Improved stereo imaging accuracy
✅ Controlled low-end energy before mix bus processing

    Beautiful and Transparent

I was referred to Paul by Langston Masingale the owner of Handsome Audio. I know Langston has super high standards, so I trusted his word and purchased a custom 10 channel attenuator and a custom monitor controller from Paul for my analog studio. Paul worked with me 1-on-1 to understand my needs and specifications and delivered in a short, turnaround period. The whole process was hassle-free and the 2 units look beautiful in my studio. True 1-of-1s, complete with my studio name engraved. Definitely recommend!

Both units visible in this YouTube post:

The attenuator is the 10 knob unit at the bottom of the left sidecar. And the monitor controller is just to the right of the stool in the 1U rack.
