Professional Passive RCA Stereo Switcher – 2 IN / 4 OUT or 4 IN / 2 OUT

A hand-built, fully passive bi-directional RCA stereo audio switcher for Hi-Fi systems, stereo amplifiers and professional audio applications. The signal ground is isolated from the chassis, and the audio signal paths are designed for clean, isolated stereo routing.

This custom configuration is designed for selecting between multiple classic Hi-Fi sources such as CD, Phono, Tape and Tuner, with custom front-panel labeling to match the connected equipment.

Use the unit as a 4 input / 2 output RCA stereo selector or reverse the configuration and use it as a 2 input / 4 output RCA stereo switcher.

Each left and right channel is completely independent from input to output, preserving stereo width, imaging accuracy and channel separation.

Pure Passive RCA Signal Path

There are no active electronics, amplification or buffering in the audio path.

The RCA routing uses mechanical switching with signal and audio-ground switching, keeping the non-selected I/O paths electrically disconnected.

The result is a direct, transparent passive signal path for high-quality stereo audio routing.

4 Stereo Sources – CD, Phono, Tape & Tuner

This particular custom build was configured for a traditional Hi-Fi source setup:

CD – CD player
PHONO – turntable / phono source
TAPE – cassette deck / tape machine
TUNER – FM/AM or vintage stereo tuner

The front panel can be individually engraved with the source names required for your system.

Bi-Directional RCA Routing

The same switcher can operate in either direction depending on how it is connected.

Select between four stereo RCA sources and route the selected source to one of two stereo outputs.

Select between two stereo RCA sources and route the selected source to one of four stereo outputs.

BBM Signal & Ground Switching

The main signal routing uses break-before-make (BBM) switching, with both L/R signal and signal ground switched together.

All RCA connectors are electrically isolated from the chassis.

The two insert loops use a common signal ground, but this signal ground has no connection to chassis ground.

System Note

The switcher is designed to prevent unwanted signal and ground interaction within the unit itself. However, noise, hum, ground loops, or crosstalk originating from other equipment or additional connections elsewhere in the audio system are outside the switcher’s control.
