STM – Stereo to Mono Switch: It provides an extra stable Real Analog Mono Base for your mix (on monos like Kick/Bass/MainVox/Snare and so on), saving precious digital-to-analog (DA) channels (so you don’t waste stereo L/R for a mono instrument), and offers superior separation and 3D depth for the rest of your stereo instruments. This feature turns L/R inputs ‘COMBINED’ (two hard-panned L/R inputs) into an absolutely centered mono signal (1 x stereo to 2 mono). For example, ‘SNARE’ on channel 1 (left), ‘KICK’ on channel 2 (right). Mono instruments in the DAW sequencer (Steinberg cubase, pro tools, flstudio, reaper, logic pro, Ableton etc.) should place the kick hard left, the bass hard on the right, and so on. Stereo instruments: If you don’t use mono channels in your mix, simply turn down all the mono switches, and you’ll have a fully stereo analog summing mixer with panning options available from the DAW.

I am a happy studio owner with this summing box

I was thinking about getting a Rolls 16 channel passive summing mixer, but then I found Paul Taylor's Vintagemaker products on eBay. I emailed Paul with some questions and he replied quickly and positively. I asked him to build me a 24 channel passive summing mixer with an insert feature and 8 channels that could switch between mono and stereo. He built and delivered the unit in 2 weeks, with most of the time being held up in customs in New York.

Paul sent pictures and regular updates throughout the process.

Once I set it up in my studio and connected it to Pro Tools, I found that the Neve 1272 preamps sounded best for the 2-bus on my mixes. The TubeTech MP1A was also great, the Focusrite was nice, and the APIs were okay. My review: it provides clarity and cohesion. It definitely sounds better than in-the-box summing and even outperformed the AMEK console I used previously. I had sold the console and needed a replacement, and this unit exceeded my expectations. I'm very happy with it and highly recommend Paul Taylor's custom-built products. He was easy to work with, communicated well, and delivered a great sounding box that integrates perfectly with my preamps. It's a serious upgrade at a reasonable price. I'd love to try his other active summing mixers, but for now, I'm a satisfied studio owner. Thanks, Paul!
